Get Certified NowTennessee is ranked 43 out of all of the states when it comes to health of the population. There are a few strengths that help the states ranking such as a high rate of high school graduation, a low prevalence of excessive drinking, and a small disparity of health status based on education level. Some of the challenges that lower the states ranking include a low immunization rate for HPV among adolescent females, many poor mental health days reported by employers, and a high prevalence of smokers. In fact, in the past few years, the number of poor mental health days has increased by 20 percent.
Over the past year, the level of physical inactivity has decreased by 28 percent in adults which helps the overall health state of the population. Another statistic that helps the ranking is that over the past five years, preventable hospitalizations has decreased by 26 percent. Even cardiovascular deaths have decreased by 22 percent over the past ten years. However, since 1990, the amount of violent crime in the state has increased by 11 percent which is a staggering number.
When looking at the senior health data of the state, the news is not much better. The state is currently ranked 44 out of the United States. The strengths that bring this ranking up include a low prevalence of chronic drinking, a high prescription drug coverage, and a high flu vaccination coverage over the senior population. Chronic drinking has decreased by 29 percent over the past year and smoking has decreased by 14 percent. Some challenges that bring the ranking lower include a high prevalence of physical inactivity, a high prevalence of food insecurity, and a high hip fracture rate. Physical inactivity has increased to 32.2 percent over the past year alone. Food insecurity has increased by 20 percent and even home health care has decreased by 11 percent.
The ranking of the health status in Tennessee is something to be alarmed about. The health rate is getting better in some areas while it is getting worse in others. As a whole, neither the overall population or the senior population has a strong positive health rating in the country. As a healthcare professional in the state or even as a resident, it is a good idea to to get CPR certified. This allows you to better protect the people around you and improve the overall health rating for the state.
