Florida Health Information

In overall health statistics, Florida ranks 32 in the U.S., making it one of the least healthy states in the country. The state does have some key benefits and strengths, including a low prevalence of smoking. It also has a lower prevalence of obesity. Both of these factors can contribute to a healthier heart and a reduced level of cancers such as lung cancer. Florida also has a low level of air pollution which also directly impacts the overall health of its residents. While these are very positive benefits for the state, there are some key challenges that hold it back and keep it from ranking higher.

Among Florida’s challenges in overall health statistics is its low rate of high school graduation. There are also numerous poor physical health days and a high incident level of salmonella occurring in the state.

There is some positive news. In the last year, binge drinking numbers have fallen by about 5% down to 15.6 percent. And, drug deaths have fallen by as much as 1% in the last two years to just 15.2 deaths per 100,000 people. Infant mortality has fallen by 42% as well. However, the state does have some negative components including physical inactivity increasing by as much as 10 percent to 25.6 percent of adults. These are concerning factors overall.

When you consider the overall health of seniors, there are a few additional levels of concern. For seniors, a high level of community support expenditures is present. There are also a lower level of falls overall. However, high ICU usage and low levels of flu vaccination tend to be key areas of concern.
