The strengths of the Georgia population when it comes to health include a low incidence of pertussis, a low rate of drug related drugs, and a high immunization rate of adolescent females for HPV. The challenges that Georgia faces include a high percentage of uninsured individuals, a high prevalence of low birth weight, and a low rate of high school graduation. One thing to take note of include the fact that physical inactivity has decreased by 13 percent in adults which means more of the population is becoming active. Additionally, in the past two years, smoking in the population has decreased by 13 percent. Preventable hospitalizations has decreased by 36 percent over the past ten years. Air pollution in Georgia has decreased by 34 percent over the past 10 years. Also, in the past 20 years, deaths associated with cardiovascular issues have decreased by 32 percent. Overall, the health of the state’s population is increasing.

When looking at the senior population in Georgia, the news is only slightly better and the state ranks at 39 overall. The strengths that lead to this ranking include a low prevalence of chronic drinking, a high SNAP enrollment, and a high percentage of health screenings. Some of the challenges that bring the ranking down include a low percentage of quality nursing home beds, a high rate of hip fractures, and a low health status. In the past year, smoking in adults 65 and old has decreased by 12 percent and chronic drinking has also decreased by 24 percent. Unfortunately, the obesity rate has increased by four percent and the flu vaccine coverage has also decreased by 9 percent. While some areas show improvement, there are others that have decreased in the past year. We can only hope the trend is towards better health overall but this year, there was a mix between the two.
