California Health Information

When compared to the rest of the nation, California, overall, has many reasons to be proud. Out of the 50 states, California has high marks and is ranked #17. This is due, in large part, to its many strengths. This is not to say, though, that California is perfect as the state has a number of areas that it could improve to increase its ranking even further. California residents don’t smoke as much as others in the country. They also tend to be less obese and obtain at least a moderate level of physical activity, two factors that can help keep conditions such as heart disease, diabetes and stroke at bay. The state has also seen its rate of violent crime decrease dramatically since 1990. Deaths as the result of drug use have also decreased in recent years. These incidences fell by 14 percent in just two years.

The number of high school graduates a state has tends to have a direct effect on the health of its residents. To this end, California has done a good job of increasing the number of ninth graders who eventually graduate. This number increased in just two years from 71.0 precent to 82.0 percent. Along with that positive statistic, though, comes some sobering news. The disparity in health status that is seen when comparing high school graduates with people who have not graduated from high school grew even larger in two years. It underwent an 10 percent increase from a difference of 35.1 percent to a 38.6 percent difference. California has the largest such gap in the nation. In addition, the state has seen the incidences of diabetes jump in the last two years from 8.9 percent of adults to 10.2 percent, an increase of 14 percent.

California seniors tend to be healthier than many other states, but they still experience some challenges. In addition to high rates of chronic drinking, a sobering number of seniors in the state have many days in which they report having poor mental health. Seniors also tend to have a low numbers when it comes to enrolling in SNAP. There has also been a drop in the number of seniors who have a dedicated health professional, opening up the possibility of serious medical issues being overlooked.
